Reading and Recording

The heart of BSC is the Reading and Recording Program. BSC is unique in that it is one of the few agencies in the U.S. providing one-on-one individualized service. Trained volunteers read to our clients in the privacy of our dedicated reading studios, in the client’s home, via internet or phone, or at offsite locations such as a public library. Volunteers read anything from textbooks and academic material, professional journals, novels, magazines, and of course, mail. They also assist with completing forms and applications, e-mail communication, internet browsing, research, online shopping, and other basic correspondence. Two-hour reading appointments are booked in advance and clients may schedule up to three sessions per week.

Those with a print disability such as dyslexia or other physical limitation (Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, brain injury, arthritis, or paralysis) that prevents holding of a book or other printed materials will find BSC a valuable resource. Our trained volunteers can help in instances where reading independence is no longer an option.

BSC provides recording of books and other materials that are not available in free audio format elsewhere. Recording is done in the BSC office.

Programs and Services

In addition to Reading and Recording services, Blind Service Chicago hosts an array of support programs. Special workshops for Seniors, to monthly social and networking opportunities, and weekly activities held on our conference line, we offer many ways to be engaged and connected.

Volunteer Opportunities

The services that are available at Blind Service Chicago could not happen without the dedication of volunteers who faithfully give of their time to read one-to-one to clients, to record books for audio playback, to mentor, to do office work, or to help in fund raising activities.
